A Quick Guide To Houseplants
Having plants around the house is a great way to bring a fresh atmosphere into any space, but looking after houseplants can be a challenge. Here are some tips and tricks to help you keep your plants happy and healthy.
1. Water
Every plant has a different water requirement. This can vary depending on the season and location of the plant. It’s a good practice to water your plant as needed rather than by a calendar schedule. Cacti and succulents will need less water whereas flowering plants will need a little more. It’s better to er on the side of caution and give less water than too much; overwatering is a common cause of houseplant death.
2. Fertiliser
Fertilisation will depend on your plants needs as well as the season. Commonly, plants do a lot of growing in the warmer seasons and so this is the best time to fertilise them. During the colder seasons fertiliser isn’t something you need to worry about. Follow the instructions on the label of your fertiliser to ensure you aren’t overfertilising your plants. Like with water, it’s better to have less than too much.
3. Potting
Overtime your plant will grow and at some point, you may have to do the daunting task of repotting. Check if your plant needs to be repotted by having a look at the root. If the roots appear in circles around the bottom of the container it’s time to repot. Handle your plant with care as if you are too rough you can shock the roots and your plant could die shortly after repotting.
4. Dusting
Over time plants gather dust, not only will they look dirty but dust gathering on leaves can hinder the growth of your plant as the leaves soak up less light and CO₂. Gently wipe the dust off with a soft brush.
5. Pruning
Pruning can happen any time of the year but Autumn is the natural time to break out your pruning scissors. Pruning can help to rejuvenate your plant as well as make them look better. Be careful where you make your cuts. The best places, are just above buds or side shoots on the stem you want to trim. Make sure you throw away any dead leaves to prevent diseases taking hold.
6. Pests
Houseplants can be the target of insects in your home. In order to keep your plant healthy and your home free from an infestation, use insecticidal soap. Along with a good spray of water, this will help curb the population of insects.
7. Disease
To ensure you don’t lose your plant to disease, remove any dead or discoloured leaves or stems. Removing these will stop the disease from spreading to the rest of your plant. Spot disease early by keeping an eye out for powdery mildew on leaves, spotty leaves and root rot.
Houseplants are good for your health — and not just for their visual beauty. Studies have proven that indoor plants improve concentration and productivity by as much as 15 percent! They also help to reduce stress levels and boost your mood — making them perfect, not just for your home but your work space, too. Using these tips you’ll be able to take care of your houseplant for longer, ensuring a happy environment around you at all times.
